#GTR2 MOD DOWNLOADS MODS#
This is how you "learn" about how mods are set up and installed. However, as you gain experience, you may want to do things more piecemeal to ensure your mods are installing correctly.īefore installing a mod, you may want to compare the "Teams" folders. Most of the time you can select "apply to all" and click on "replace" and you'll be okay. If you allow this, you'll then see another dialogue box asking about copying and replacing files. You will see a dialogue box asking if you want to merge folders. You can open that folder, and drag the contents over to the GTR2 GameData folder (just don't unintentionally drag and drop on top of any folders or files).

Most zip or rar mod files have a GameData folder. You should be able to see how the folders within most mods match the folders within GTR2's folders. Navigate to the directory above, and open the mod rar or zip with 7z (directions above), and place the 7z window next to the GTR2 window. If you installed GTR2 from a CD, then this may be different-you'll need to do a search for the correct path.Ĭlose or exit GTR2 if it is running. Then I manually drag the files to the GTR2 directory listed below (much the same as dragging from the 7z window-more below).Īll GTR2 mods go into this directory, and the files inside the zip and rar files are (usually) structured to match the structure within this folder.Ĭomputer > Local Disk © > Program Files (x86) > Steam > SteamApps > common > GTR2 - FIA GT Racing > GameData I usually specify a temporary folder somewhere, directing the installer to place all the files there.

If you download any exe files (not common, but there's a few), I recommend not letting them install automatically into your GTR2 directory (more below).

Most of the time it's just credit information, but look for any additional instructions about installation-this is very important if the mod is an update or add-on to another mod. Look for and open any README files (double click on them in the 7z window). You can place this window next to the GTR2 directory (see below) to compare the folders and files. Once 7z is installed, right-click on the file, select 7z, and select "open archive." The zip or rar will then open in a 7z window. A 0.1 to 0.9 usually means it's still not finished (though playable), while 1.0 and above are complete or updated further (like 1.4, 2.1, etc.).ĭownload 7-Zip to open all downloaded zip and rar files. Watch for statements that this mod requires another mod to be installed first, or that you need to completely remove an old mod.

You also need to review information about each mod you're about to download, and watch out for "mod updates." You may think you're installing a full mod, but if it's an update, you may end up with files that may crash the game (after a suspect car has been selected) or have classes with only a car or two, where there should be at least five or more. I primarily use Chrome, and it manages downloads well. Unless you've changed your browser's download settings, all downloads will be saved to your "download" folder. Then you'll see a green download button on the following page. Mediafire usually presents you with an ad-screen, but you need to watch the upper right corner for the 5-second countdown, then press the "Skip Ad" button. When you find a link on a download site, it will either download directly, or you have to download via Mediafire. Often, just adding ORIGINAL to the end of the file will prevent it from being overwritten, and GTR2 shouldn't load it, but rather the new files you're copying into GTR2's directories. Also, keep the original versions of the files that you are replacing. To be safe, look up information on creating a "restore point" in Windows before doing anything that you think may cause problems. This is an "at your own risk" sort of thing, but if you follow the instructions, you shouldn't have any problems. You will need to search for a mod to "unlock" certain types of cars in GTR2. They usually identify problems, and whether the author has corrected them in an update. Ideally, you should go to sites where other users have posted comments and rated the mod. Also, some may be "questionable" considering their origin, or if they were "copied" from somewhere else.

You can find some good mods there, but there's also some incomplete or poorly-developed mods as well. DrivingItalia is probably the least-managed of the download sites.

There's a couple of good German sites with a few hundred mods. Do a Google search for GTR2 Mods, and you should find at least three or four sites. I'm not going to list any sites here, or promote them.
